It’s been a very eventful couple of months, hard to know to
where to begin. I can’t remember the last thing that I wrote about, so I actually
had to go back and look at it. That’s right, I was talking about me maybe
having cervical cancer. Luckily that didn't happen, but what a scary couple of
months. Things got worse before they got better and I finally feel like I am on
the mend.
So, let’s talk about what’s happened since…ahhhh last
Christmas! Yikes! Always got to put in the Colton Family Christmas picture. I
sometimes like to print them and put them on my wall, but Tanner looks super
silly in both. HA!
First and foremost, Jimmy graduated! Mr. James Hall has a Bachelor’s of Science in Communication with an emphasis in Journalism. He also minored in Cinema Studies, you know his love of movies (www.sceensting.com). Super proud of him.
With special thanks to both of sets of our parents and my grandpa, I set him up
with an awesome trip to UNIVERSAL STUDIOS! IN FLORIDA! It was really great. If
you didn't already know, he is also a huge Harry Potter fan, so it was really
great to see everything Harry Potter. The main ride while you had to wait in
line for a long time, you walked through the whole Hogwarts Castle you got to
look everything, most of the classrooms, the cup, Dumbledore’s office, and it
was brilliant! There was this roller coaster that you sat in the chair and
picked the music you ride to. It was seriously a right angle up and (almost) down.
If I was going to throw up on a ride, that was it. Here are some of my favorite
pictures from that including the cool place that we stayed Cabana Bay Beach
Resort. It had a cool 1950’s theme to it!
After our super fun vacation it was back to reality :(
Not long after we got back Jimmy got an internship with a newspaper in Salt Lake called City Weekly. They were very interested in having him. He traveled to Salt Lake twice a week via the Front-runner, which is a big light rail. Pretty cool, cheap, but they only paid for articles that made the paper, and they were going to give him a stipend at the end. It was great, it was experience, which was a lot of Jimmy's problem. I was enjoying my time at TRA Snow and Sun. I met and worked with some very wonderful people

Everyone there was wonderful. I still remember my first day, it was a Friday and every other week we got paid, so 2 ladies, Connie and Lisa took me out to lunch and told me all the details of the company. I can never be more grateful towards 2 wonderful ladies. I was hired as the receptionist, but as they will attest, I did SOOO much more. In March of this year, the owners daughter had decided to quit as the Marketing Manager to spend more time with her newborn. The owners offered me the position, and I was thrilled. To spend so little time, but to work my way to a management position was great! I learned so much about Marketing and had a great time sitting in the every other Thursday Managers meetings. Since the place was so small, basically everyone was a manager. I was the only person in the Marketing department :)
As Jimmy had graduated and working on City Weekly, it just didn't feel like enough for him. He was struggling to find a grip on life and deal with his depression. As I had told TRA before they had offered me the Marketing position, Jimmy was looking for full-time work. I enjoyed my job at TRA. Full-time, benefits, dental and what not. One of the other people at my office once asked me why I was so willing to just give up my great job for something that Jimmy was going to do, what would I do? This person wasn't LDS and kind of had bad experiences with LDS people, so she just assumed that I was just going to quit and have babies (not there is anything wrong with that, she just had this stereotype pictured)
She asked me "where's YOUR pride and the pride that you have for being a hard working woman?" That comment really hit me and I had to stand back and decide how I wanted to approach it, so here was my answer: Yes, I did have a great job that was providing for both Jimmy and I, but this was not what I wanted to do the rest of my life. If I could give up this job for a job that Jimmy is really going to excel, learn, grow and become a better writer in, why wouldn't I give that up for him to be happy? Is he not my other half and do I have the faith that he can do the job that he trained for?
I think she was surprised. It wasn't that I was trying to "be that stereotypical LDS woman" that she has in her mind, it was that I wanted what was best for us. I know that my true calling isn't doing Marketing, though I was grateful for the job. I knew that in my heart that Utah wasn't the place we were meant to live, or start a family.
After applying for hundreds of jobs, one finally gave him a call back. She had called and emailed back and forth with Jimmy and it was down to Jimmy and 4 other people. His odds...well weren't as good as we would like. After one faithful morning at the temple in South Jordan, Jimmy turned on his phone and had a voice-mail from Tillie; "Please give me a call back at my house, I want to speak with you about the position." That totally sounds like a denial call, which I have had my experience with. I remember being in the celestial room not 15 minutes before that and having a calm feeling. The Lord has told me, if he gets the job go, if he doesn't keep trying. That was pretty clear, so when he called back, I didn't know what to expect.
Well, he got it and we picked up and moved. I've never really moved with as much stuff as we had. We rented a U-Haul, hooked up the car and went in 2 weeks. I am extremely anxious when it comes to the car. I have a panic disorder, so something like this was difficult. Jimmy drove the WHOLE time. Tillie (the editor of the paper) had found us a little house to live in for almost 200 less than what we paid for rent in our apartment, and we were even blessed enough to find someone to take the rest of our contract which saved us TONS of money. We didn't get to keep the deposit but, it went to the new people, so it was better for them.
SO! We live in Lakeview, OR. Here are some pictures around town. You will notice a few things.
- No movie theater
- No stop lights
- Lots of little stores, but almost NO chain stores. One grocery store, Safeway
- Not that many people!
- Lots of ranches and farms. Few very wealthy farms and families
- Not much diversity
- 15 min from the California border, small town called Alturus where there is a movie theater, 1 screen though, little behind.
- Nearest big town called Klamath Falls. Fairly large, movie theater, Walmart, mall..etc.
- The main part of town looks like downtown Port Townsend, but then step away and it is Montana. Made my mom very home sick.
My parents were in town this past weekend, so we rolled around. Lakeview has been great to us so far. People wave back to you, want to get to know you and why you decided to move there! Every time we go out to eat, "what brings you into town, OH YOU MOVED HERE."
Lowdown about Jimmy's job:
He was hired as a General Reporter. So, he pretty much does everything. When school starts back up he will cover not Lakeview but a neighboring town called Paisley's high school sports. He writes about events, town hall things, the hospital, breaking news. He takes pictures and interviews people. It's been hard because of the huge learning curve that it has. He has been doing better, I think he just expected to be perfect the first time, and he wasn't! There is no problem with learning, you just have to remember that is what you are doing! There is only 2 reporters at the place, so he has lots of writing to do each week. The newspaper has his name all over it. We have committed to 2 years. It's been great, but also stressful. We have things that we have never had before like a yard or a property to take care of. Believe it or not, I'm excited to plant some stuff! I have a garden in the front and back. My dad bought us a little BBQ when he was here. We get a lot of sun. It's close to Nevada and California, but we get cold at night. As we creep into August the nights are getting colder which makes no sense.

We don't own this house. We are renting it, but I still feel like it's a good step towards having a family and moving away from apartments. There is more room than we ever had. It's about 1200 square feet. We bought a couch of KSL when we were in Orem and I hated it. It was old and nasty and it was the sickest color. We brought one couch with us, the first one that we bought when we got married. Oh man, it's extremely uncomfortable. So we had some money left over from the move and bought a new couch and a new rocking chair! When we have kids, I think that this chair is going to help with that.
OH! one more funny story, when we were moving I put a box on top of the half shelf that you see in the first row of pictures. I destroyed that shelf, so we tried to put it together and we made it worse, so we just cut it in half! hahah.
Last section: What Taea is doing!
That's right! I am going to be a high school math teacher!
I am overly convinced that we are being ultra blessed being in this little town. After having an epic failure of trying to get a teaching job in Utah, I kind of let that dream go. I enjoyed my time there, but I believe that my passion was lacking, and I wasn't sure why. My confidence was destroyed after getting denied so many times.
I hadn't really thought about trying in this little town. Graduating class of maybe 45. One day when Jimmy is working, his co-worker was talking to the superintendent on the phone and he was complaining that they still couldn't find a math teacher. They had been looking for months. Jimmy's co-worker told him about me. Couple minutes later the superintendent had called JIMMY and set up an interview with me. The next day, I was at the district office talking with the superintendent. Just a regular convo. That afternoon, he had scheduled me to meet with the principal and vice principal. Later that week, I met with them.
Reflecting on my experience with the two men about my previous experience and what I want in my teaching career, I felt....great after my interview. As I was leaving the principal said..."You're job search might be over." My confidence level at this point was coming up, but I was still scared out of my mind. For anyone that knew me in college, it wasn't that I couldn't do the math, but I think my non self-confidence and lack of vision hurt my college career. Jimmy asked me if I would go back and my initial reaction was NO. I really don't think that I can do it, but I will do everything in my power to make the best of it and make a positive impact on kids lives. They are on periods. 7 each day. I will teach 3 Geometry and 3 Alg II courses with a prep.
Here are some pictures of my new school
First Day: New Teachers Orientation, August 21st. GO HONKERS (no snickering)
Colors: Blue and Gold.
Mascot: Canadian Goose
That's all I can really think of. We are here and trying to blend into the community and not stick out like a sore thumb so much. We kinda do cause we aren't cowboys, but perhaps I will buy a hat.
We are closer to family, but we are still about 8 hours from both of our families. We aren't sure what we are going to do with holidays, Jimmy won't earn any vacation time till January, so we may have to have our own. I get 3 weeks off! We are hoping this place continues to be good to us. We love all of our families! Oh and we just switched phone carriers to Verizon, so if we haven't been answering your call or texts. We aren't ignoring you!
